COURT

I waited until Donnie was out of town before returning to the warehouse he’d taken me to. I needed to scope out the place in more detail since, when we were there before, I had his eyes on me the entire time. Lucky for me, I had the testing supplies he’d given me, so if I ran into anyone, I had an excuse for being there.

After entering the security code Donnie had given me, I walked inside.

“Who the fuck are you?” clipped one of the dudes I hadn’t seen before. He stood from the table he’d been sitting at like he was ready to throw down.

“Kev, he’s cool,” Lo said, walking my way and extending his hand. He was one of the guys I played basketball with.

We shook, and then I held up the box in my hand. “Just dropping this off, so I’m ready when the shipment comes in.”

Lo nodded. “Donnie mentioned something about you testing our next supply.”

“I think what happened with Morgan really freaked him out. I’m guessing you’ve had no problems before?”

“Not that I know of.” Lo shook his head. “Usually our guy gives us good shit and we only cut the product with baby powder.”

“How long have you been using this supplier?” I asked, and Lo tilted his head slightly as though I was trying to get too much info for a guy like me. So, I explained, “Because maybe that’s his thing. Gives you pure shit for a while and then starts cutting it with other stuff so he can profit more.”

“He’s fucked if that’s true.”

I lifted a shoulder. “Yeah, but now that he knows we know, he probably won’t do it for a while.”

“Then we gotta keep testing it.”

“That’s why I’m here.” I smiled. “I should probably test the rest of this batch too, since it was already laced with something. Where should I set up?”

A few tables sat in the center of the room, but they were occupied by guys weighing and packaging products, and others mixing the powdered drugs with baby powder.

Lo pointed to a small workbench by the wall. “You can set up there. If you need anything, just ask.”

I unpacked the testing supplies and glanced around the room. A couple of the guys were making small talk, while Lo leaned against the wall, arms folded, watching everyone. Even though I didn’t know who any of Donnie’s guys were before, I quickly realized Lo ran shit around here.

Grabbing one baggy to test, I took a deep breath. Three more days, and then it would all be over. Until then, I would be watching and waiting and counting down the minutes.
